Sacred Sites Around the Sea of Galilee: A 1–2 Day Pilgrimage Route

Aug 26, 2025 | Sea of Galilee

The northern shores of the Kinneret are home to some of Christianity’s most cherished sites. This loop keeps driving short and experiences rich.

Suggested route (north shore focus)

  1. Mount of Beatitudes – Serene gardens and a panoramic view of the lake to set the tone for the day.

  2. Tabgha (Church of the Multiplication & Primacy of Peter) – Mosaics and lakeside reflections.

  3. Capernaum (Kfar Nahum) – Archaeological remains of a synagogue and village by the water.

  4. Magdala – Archaeology and modern worship spaces, close to Tiberias.

  5. Yardenit (south of the lake) – Jordan River baptismal site; peaceful riverbanks.

Timing & flow

  • Start early at the Mount of Beatitudes to enjoy cooler temps and quieter grounds.

  • Midday: Tabgha → Capernaum (short hops).

  • Lunch: Tiberias or a kibbutz eatery on the east/west shores.

  • Afternoon: Magdala, then drive to Yardenit for golden-hour light.

Dress code & etiquette

  • Shoulders and knees covered at churches; hats off indoors.

  • Speak softly; many visitors are praying.

  • Check opening hours; some sites close midday or earlier on Fridays/holiday eves.

Add-ons if you have more time

  • Arbel Cliffs hike/lookout for dramatic lake panoramas.

  • Hamat Tiberias for hot springs and ancient mosaics.

  • Boat ride at sunset from Tiberias or Ein Gev.
